Exclusive Interview with Michael Mercier – French Model and actor

Michael Mercier is a French actor born in the 70s, he lived in Montpellier until the age of 4 then grew up in the Paris region until the age of 28. He studied theater with Michel Galabru in the early 90s and decided to leave France for the United States. He will spend a large part of his life in New York, in Finance, as a trader. He is introduced to Harold Guskin, one of the greatest acting coaches with whom he will work for three intensive years. Back in France in 2013, Michael will play in 6 feature films including “24 days” by Alexandre Arcady, “Les Gorilles” by Tristan Aurouet, “Deux au carré” by Philippe Dajoux, “On voulait tout casse” by Philippe Guillard, “Raid Dingue” by Dany Boon then “Dalida” by Lisa Azuelos. Since October 2017 he has been starring in “Regarde-moi”, a two-character play, performed at the Théâtre des Mathurins.

Here is our exclusive interview with Michael Mercier

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in acting?

From a very young age, I have been passionate about the world of cinema and theater. This passion naturally led me to embrace a career in acting.

2. Can you share a defining moment in your career that changed your perspective on acting?

A pivotal moment was portraying a doctor. This role made me realize the importance of thorough preparation and research to authentically embody specific professions.

3. How do you prepare for a role, and do you have any special rituals before stepping into character?

For each role, I immerse myself deeply by studying the character’s context. Whether playing a charming lead, a doctor, or a businessman, I strive to understand their world. Before stepping on stage or set, I like to lighten the atmosphere with a touch of humor, as I’m known for being quite the joker.

4. You’ve played a variety of roles. do you prefer drama, comedy, or action? Why?

I have a particular affinity for action roles, inspired by characters like James Bond and Rocky Balboa. These roles allow me to tackle physical and mental challenges, which I thoroughly enjoy.

5. What has been the most challenging role you’ve ever played, and how did you overcome it?

Portraying a ruthless businessman was challenging, as it required showcasing a tougher side of my personality. I overcame this by observing professionals in the field and incorporating their behaviors into my performance.

6. French cinema has a unique storytelling style. how does it compare to Hollywood or other film industries you’ve worked in?

Having worked in both France and the USA, I’ve observed that French cinema often prioritizes character depth and storytelling, while Hollywood emphasizes spectacle and action. Both approaches are enriching and offer different perspectives.

7. Is there a French filmmaker you dream of collaborating with?

Collaborating with a renowned French director would be a dream, as it would allow me to contribute to significant works in French cinema.

8. What do you think defines French cinema, and how do you see its future evolving?

French cinema is characterized by its authenticity and its ability to explore profound themes. I believe it will continue to evolve by integrating new voices and opening up more to international influences.

9. What motivates you to keep pushing yourself as an artist?

My passion for the craft and my constant desire to take on new challenges drive me to continually surpass myself.

10. Do you have any mentors or actors who have influenced your craft?

Iconic figures like James Bond, Robert De Niro, and Rocky Balboa have greatly influenced my approach to acting.

11. How do you balance your personal life with the demands of being in the spotlight?

By maintaining a lighthearted attitude and using humor to decompress, I manage to maintain a healthy balance between my professional and personal life.

12. Are there any upcoming projects you’re excited about?

Yes, several exciting projects are in the works, but I prefer to keep the details under wraps for now.

13. If you could play any historical or fictional character, who would it be and why?

Portraying James Bond would be a dream, as this character combines sophistication, action, and charisma.

14. Do you have aspirations beyond acting, such as directing or producing?

Yes, I am considering venturing into directing in the future, to tell my own stories and take on new creative challenges.

15. What’s a fun fact about you that most of your fans don’t know?

Few people know this, but I’m quite the prankster. I love cracking jokes on set and bringing good humor to those around me.
